Meet the BLUG!

Linux for QQ!
Thursday, 31 July 2008
QQ for Linux! The famous Chinese instant messaging client, QQ , has been made available for Linux today and apparently released under the GPL license. This is definitely a stepping stone for us Linux users in China and the abilities to experience the web like any other Chinese Windows user. The QQ client can be downloaded directly from here now, and if the licensing terms are confirmed, from any Linux repository soon.

What's next this year? All Chinese webmasters making standard compliant websites and giving up ActiveX ?

Update: cnbeta has since removed their page mentioning QQ client release under GPL...

Lemote Group Order
Thursday, 31 July 2008
Lemote - Fuloong 2FFollowing members' requests for a group order of Lemote Fuloong computers (based on the Loongson 2F CPU) we have been in liaison with Prof. Zhang and are organizing the order. The Lemote box is an excellent appliance to be used as a cheap, power efficient Linux server or test machine. You could also try to set up a solar powered installation around that machine.
Get more details about the Fuloong here, get pricing, terms & conditions and apply for the group order here. We'll be collecting the money around mid August and delivery in BLUG office should be around the end of August based on quantities and status with the Olympic Games.

The server synchronizes every three to six hour intervals and includes CD / DVD iso files as well as stable and development versions of the RPM packages. Simultaneously the server also provides rsync services so other domestic sources can update locally. Current disk space is 250 GiB of a 400 GiB available. Preparing for GNOME.Asia Summit
Wednesday, 23 July 2008
Gnome.Asia SummitPreparation of the first ever Gnome Summit in Asia is well under way, thanks to members of the Gnome Community, the people from Sun Microsystems and BLUG members. Yes, we're giving a helping hand and are part of the organizational committee. This means doing things like brainstorming on the event slogan, helping with the website, making banners (as you can see on the site here) and a few other things.
Of course we'll surely build another conference team as we did for the Linux Developer Symposium in February and assist during the two days of the event.

Paper submissions are closing on August 15th, so if you have a specific topic you'd like to present to the Asian Gnome community, you still have three weeks to get your ideas together! And for those wondering when this is happening, well the GNOME.Asia Summit will be in October on Friday 17th Saturday 18th, 2008!
